OLD STYLE (up to 1752) and NEW STYLE DATES: |
Prior to 1753 a new year in Great Britain, Ireland & colonies commenced on "Lady Day", 25th March, so dates between 1st January & 24th March inclusive fell at the end of a calendar year, not at the beginning (i.e. using the "old style" dates, November 1633 preceded February 1633). For years up to and including 1752, dates from 1st January to 24th March inclusive are shown on this site using both old & new style, e.g. 24-Jan-1633/4, 12-Mar-1715/6, etc. |
|
REGNAL YEARS & SAINTS' DAYS: |
Early documents are often dated using the regnal year instead of a calendar year. A regnal year is reckoned starting from the date of a sovereign's accession or anniversary, e.g. Henry VIII became King of England on 22-Apr-1509, therefore the regnal year "30 Henry VIII" is 22-Apr-1538 to 21-Apr-1539.
Similarly, the day of the month may be indicated by the name of a church festival (feast or saint's day) held on that day.
For example, a document may be dated "the feast of St.John the Baptist" (29th Aug.) or "the feast of the 11 thousand virgins" (St.Ursula, 21st Oct.)
A wonderful source of date conversion tables for regnal years, medieval church festivals, etc is "Handbook of Dates for Students of English History", edited by C.R.Cheney & Michael Jones, published by The Royal Historical Society, London 1945 & Cambridge University Press 1995. |
