Ballyseedy New Church and Graveyard
Ballyseedy, Tralee, Co.Kerry

Church of Ireland - Diocese of Ardfert & Aghadoe

Ballyseedy is pronounced "Ballysheedy" (Bail ó Sioda = O'Sheedy's Town).
Ballyseedy townland is a small part of the larger Ballyseedy civil parish (= Ballyseedy Church of Ireland parish)

Detail from old Ordnance Survey Map

On this map "Ballyseedy Church (In Ruins)" is the small white rectangle inside the old graveyard (the area marked Grave Yd ).

On this map "Church" is the small black rectangle representing the "Church of Ireland" church (built 1871) in the new churchyard (this is below the area marked marked Grave Y).

The new churchyard appears as it was before being enlarged, extended southwards, shortly before 1963.

The 17th century "Church of Ireland" church is a ruin in the old graveyardadjacent to the new graveyard on the north side. This was already a ruin in 1830. During the 1830s, and until a new church was opened, services were held in the school house at Farmers Bridge.

A church at Ballyseedy is said to have been opened by Arthur Blennerhassett of Ballyseedy House c1840; this was perhaps the schoolhouse church; and perhaps the church from which came churchplate inscribed "Ballyseedy Church 1839" [Leslie p.166].
That was replaced by the present church, built in 1871, the proposal of Rev. William Webb Raymond (incumbent 1857-1869), and enlarged 1877.

The following is an extract from: "The Church of Ireland in Co. Kerry" by J.A. Murphy pp.50-51.

History:
In 1837, service was being held in the schoolhouse at Farmer's Bridge, an inscribed churchplate, 'Ballyseedy Church 1839' is noted (Leslie, p.166). The [present] church was built in 1871, and subsequently enlarged 1877 to double its size, creating seating for almost two hundred. The renovated church was consecrated in 1878, the report of which noted the contributions of Arthur Blennerhassett, Thomas Blennerhassett (late), Colonel Blennerhassett (late) and W[illia]m Blennerhassett (East Indian Civil Service), Miss Nash of Ballycarty, J. Du B[oulay] Blennerhassett, Mrs Charles Mason, Major Walker Leigh, and late Mr Charles F. Nash. It also noted the constant support of Samuel Murray Hussey of Edenburn (Kerry Evening Post, 25 September 1878). It was reported that lamps had substituted candles at the church in 1887: 'the handsome brass coronas have been retained and utilised each carrying four Princess lamps. These not only give a softer and fuller light than the candles ... but the ruby bowls add to the appearance and match well with the rich colours of the windows' (Kerry Evening Post, 29 Jan 1887). A record of memorial tablets in the church and other features of interest can be found in Inspiring Stones (pp.178-179).

1874 Ballyseedy united to Ballymacelligott; duties performed during intervening period by clergy of Ballymacelligott.

Ballyseedy Clergy:
1806-1808 Francis Spring Eager (c1770/1-March 1808) was curate; son of James Eager of "Cottage" & Ballyhar, Co.Kerry and Catherine Spring, daughter of Francis Spring of Cloonalassan House, Ballycrispin, Castlemaine.
1817-1847 William Godfrey
1847-1853 Edward Nash
1853-1857 Thomas Brook (1815-1875)
1857-1869 William Webb Raymond, who conceived the idea of building a new church at Ballyseedy.
1869-1870 Henry Gubbins (1819-1870)

Last of the Blennerhassett family of Ballyseedy Castle

(individual memorials are in the graveyard)

Arthur Blennerhassett of Ballyseedy was a prominent Kerry gentleman, Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) for the county.

From 1900 he was Major in the 4th (6th?) Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers.

Tasked during WWI with obtaining army remounts, he travelled extensively in the USA, Australia & New Zealand purchasing horses to replace those being lost in large numbers on the western front.

Arthur's wife Clara Nesta Richarda (known as Nesta) and their younger daughters Hilda & Vera during WWI served as V.A.D. (Voluntary Aid Detachment) nurses, caring for the wounded first at the battlefields of France, later on Lord Dunraven's hospital ship "Grianaig" in the Mediterranean. For this service Nesta was awarded M.B.E. and all three, unusually for civilians, received the British Expeditionary Force 1914-15 star, a British Army medal awarded for service in France or Belgium between 5-Aug-1914 and 31-Dec-1915. This medal is known as the "Mons Star" because so many recipients fought at Mons.

Their eldest daughter Nesta Georgie Blennerhassett (known as Georgie) in the 1920 civilian war honours list was awarded an O.B.E. for her "valuable work in providing comforts for soldiers and prisoners of war...".

Georgie married Lt.-Col. Verelst Turner Worship, D.S.O., Royal Munster Fusiliers. The wedding, initially planned for Ballyseedy church, was "...owing to threatened dislocation of traffic in Ireland..." instead held quietly at St Peter's Church, Cranley Gardens, Kensington, London on 17-Jun-1920
["The Times" of 6th May, 19th May & 22nd June 1920].

Georgie Worship died 14-Jul-1930 at her home "The Manor", Ludham, Norfolk. She buried at St Catherines's Church, Ludham (grave F 34). Her husband Verelst Turner Worship of 21 Blackborough Road, Reigate, Surrey died 4-Apr-1956.

The lower plate is misplaced. Margaret died 24-Aug-1876 and left no children. Thomas Blennerhassett was her brother, not her son. When replacing the plates following completion of building renovation work, this plate has been accidentally swapped with another.

The correct plate for this space, inscribed "Erected by her brother lieut. Col. Francis Barry Blennerhassett of Ballyseedy", is presently installed in the wrong position, under the window dedicated to their mother Dorcas Blennerhassett, who d.2-Aug-1822

The lower plate carries an inscription that has no connection with Crosbie Blennerhassett, under whose window it is placed. It is a partial duplicate of a plate under the window for Francis Barry Blennerhassett (see right).

This plate on its outward facing side is unfinished and unlike all the other brass plates in the series the edges are not bevelled; it appears to carry an inscription that was rejected and is possible the correct inscription for this plate may be on the reverse side.

Ballyseedy New Graveyard (Church of Ireland)

Although few of Blennerhassett name now reside within Ballyseedy townland or parish, the Irish custom of choosing when practicable to be buried at the parish of your forefathers has ensured that many Blennerhassetts continue to find a final resting place at Ballyseedy.

The new churchyard extended southwards to reach its present dimensions at some date shortly before 1963 <what year?> .
