Rev. John Blennerhassett (1803-1890)

Rev. John Blennerhassett (b.3-Mar-1803 Elm Grove, Ballyseedy, Co.Kerry - d.5-Sep-1890 Co.Dorset) was in 1826 ordained as anglican priest. He ministered at Ryme Intrinseca first as Curate (1830-1832) then for 58 years (1832-1890) as Rector. He was also Vicar of Hermitage, a nearby Dorset village, 1834-1885. John married Elizabeth Houssemayne du Boulay (b.1814 d.1904).

As a family the Blennerhassetts are said to have had a deep and lasting sense of belonging to the village church and community, and John Blennerhassett had a strong interest in the welfare and conditions of Dorset farm labourers.

John's elder brother William Blennerhassett (b.10-Jul-1800 Elm Grove, Ballyseedy, Co.Kerry - d.27-Apr-1860) was Vicar of Iwerne Minster, Co.Dorset 1832-1860. William married Elizabeth's twin sister, Emma Sophia Houssemyne du Boulay (b.1814 d.1896).

Ryme Intrinseca no longer supports its own Rector, in 1984 becoming part of a grouped parish with Yetminster and High Stoy, known since 2002 as The Wriggle Valley Benefice.

This portrait in oil of Rev. John Blennerhassett, Rector of Ryme Intrinseca, was presented to the village school, of which he was a founder, by his own children to mark his devotion to that school and to the village children.
When the village school closed the portrait was moved to the church, where it hangs on the west wall of the nave. A photograph of the portrait is in the Stockwell Collection at Dorset Record Office, Dorchester, Co.Dorset [DRO Catalogue Ref. D1733]
